Located in Wingdale, New York, Harlem Valley State Hospital operated from 1924 to 1994. The property was originally intended to become Wingdale Prison, but was instead repurposed into a psychiatric hospital. Spanning nearly 800 acres with more than 80 buildings, the institution housed thousands of patients throughout its history.

And like many psychiatric hospitals of its era, Harlem Valley became known for treatments that are now considered controversial, including insulin shock therapy, electroconvulsive therapy, and later frontal lobotomies. Dr. Walter Freeman, who helped popularize the transorbital (“ice pick”) lobotomy in the United States, performed demonstrations at Harlem Valley, and the hospital became one of New York’s notable institutions associated with the procedure.
